What is Stuttering?
Stuttering is a speech fluency disorder that affects the flow of speech. It may involve repetitions of sounds, syllables, or words; prolongations of sounds; or blocks where no sound comes out. Stuttering can vary in severity and may be accompanied by physical tension or avoidance behaviours.
When to Seek Help
- Your child has been stuttering for more than 6 months
- There is a family history of stuttering
- Your child shows frustration, avoidance, or awareness of their stuttering
- Physical tension is visible during speech (e.g., eye blinking, jaw tension)
- Stuttering is affecting school participation or social interactions
- An adult wants to manage stuttering in professional or social settings
Our Approach
For young children, we use the Lidcombe Program and other early intervention approaches that involve parent coaching. For older children and adults, we use a combination of fluency-shaping techniques, stuttering modification strategies, and cognitive-behavioural approaches to reduce avoidance and build confidence.
